Kürtlerin yüzde 30'unun Türkmen, Alevilerin bir kısmının Ermeni olduğunu ileri süren TTK Başkanı Halaçoğlu'na Tarih Vakfı üyelerinden yazılı açıklama geldi: Halaçoğlu ne etnisite ne de aşiret konusunda bilgi sahibidir. Şimdi onlara (Kürtlere) gidip "Siz aslında Türksünüz, haydi asıl kimliğinize dönün" demek, sadece ırkçılıkla izah edilebilecek bir tutum olur.
Açıklamada şu ifadeye de yer verildi: "Jivkov döneminde Bulgar hükümeti, kendisine 'Türk' diyen insanlara, siz aslında 'Bulgar ve Hıristiyandınız, sonradan Türkleştiniz' diyerek baskı uygulamıştı. Halaçoğlu'nun söylediği şeylerle bu tutum arasında yaklaşım ve temel mantık açısından hiç fark yoktur."
