Hazar denizinin doğusunda Ceyhûn (Amû Deryâ) nehrinin aşağı mecrâsının her iki tarafında bulunan ülkeye Hârezm ismi verilmiştir. Bu ülkenin başkenti Gürgenç (veya Gürgânc-Ürgenç)'dir.
Adı geçen bölgeye hâkim olan veya idare eden kimselere verilen unvan ise "Hârezmşâh"dır. Tarihçilere göre Hârezmşâhlar tarihi esas itibarıyla dört kısma ayrılmıştır.
Afrigîler, İslâm'dan önce mevcut olup 995 yılına kadar devam etmiştir.
